CALANGUTE: An octogenarian NRI tourist from the UK died after he was knocked down by a car driven by another tourist. Harish Solanki, 86, was crushed against a compound wall at Candolim on Friday. Calangute police have informed the British high commission about the accident.
Solanki and his wife Chandrakanta, 81, were walking on the side of the main Candolim-Calangute road after exiting their hotel when they were rammed by a speeding rental car driven by Vicky Jain, 48.
The car veered to the wrong side of the road after Jain lost control, according to Calangute police. The accident occurred around 10am.
The couple, who sustained grievous injuries, were taken in an ambulance stationed at the nearby Candolim primary health centre to GMC. Solanki died on Friday evening. His wife is currently undergoing treatment at GMC and is in critical condition.
Both are British passport holders, police said.
Jain, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested. His car was extensively damaged. Calangute police have registered an offence under various sections of the BNS against Jain for “driving his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner without taking proper care and caution”. Police said Jain was proceeding from Sinquerim to Calangute and near a popular Candolim restaurant, he lost control of the car, which dashed into the couple.
Further investigations are on.
