‘Liver detox organ, don’t overload with toxins’
Lucknow: Maintaining healthy liver hinged on sound sleep cycle, daily fitness routine and a balanced diet while minimising intake of refined, packaged and sugary foods, experts said at a health talk organised by Medanta Hospital on Saturday to mark World Liver Day (Apr 19).
Liver plays vital role in detoxifying body, storing energy and maintaining immunity. Common liver diseases like cirrhosis, hepatitis and fatty liver can be prevented through timely diagnosis and healthy lifestyle. In severe cases, however, especially among children, cancer patients and those with acute liver failure, liver transplant remains the only effective treatment.
Director of gastroenterology, Medanta, Dr Abhay Verma, said, "Excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, fatty liver and adverse effects of certain medications were leading causes of liver ailments and we must all resolve to protect our liver through balanced diet, regular exercise and healthy lifestyle."
Senior consultant, Dr Vivek Gupta, said, "Liver diseases are increasing in children, largely due to lifestyle changes, inadequate sleep and rising environmental pollution. As liver is body's primary detox organ, it is becoming overloaded with toxins. To maintain liver health, children should be encouraged to stay physically active and avoid junk food—particularly items that are sugary, refined, or highly processed."
