NEW DELHI: The Karnataka high court on Thursday directed the police that no coercive action be taken against singer Sonu Nigam until next hearing, if the singer cooperates with the investigators.The court issued the order while hearing a plea filed by Nigam seeking the quashing of the police case registered against him for allegedly making offensive remarks about the Kannadiga community.Nigam sparked controversy with comments made during a live concert in Bengaluru on 22 April. A complaint was filed at Avalahalli police station, leading to an FIR against the singer.Police first issued a notice seeking a response within seven days, followed by another after no reply. The FIR was formally registered on May 3.

The complaint was lodged by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike’s Bengaluru district president, Dharmaraj A. Nigam was accused of making comments that hurt Kannadiga sentiments.On 5 May, Nigam issued a public apology, saying his love for Karnataka outweighed his ego. He expressed regret and assured fans that no offence was intended.
