The 2025 Australian Grand Prix opened with high drama as three cars crashed out within the first lap, setting the tone for a chaotic race. New Williams driver Carlos Sainz, along with rookies Isack Hadjar and Jack Doohan, were forced to retire early after crashing under challenging wet conditions at Albert Park.
Carlos Sainz’s Australian GP ends early after shocking crash
The drama began even before the race officially started when Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar spun out on the formation lap, crashing into the barriers at Turn 2 and triggering a delayed start. Once the race got underway, Jack Doohan’s troubles followed swiftly. The Alpine rookie lost control coming out of Turn 5 after touching the wet painted lines, sending his car into the barriers and bringing out the Safety Car.
Carlos Sainz, making his debut for Williams after switching from Ferrari, added to the chaos by spinning out on the final corner under the Safety Car. The Spaniard cited a torque surge as the reason behind his crash, which resulted in heavy damage to the right side of his car. This marked a frustrating start to Sainz’s campaign with Williams, especially after qualifying 10th, four places behind his teammate Alex Albon.
Despite the setback, Sainz remained optimistic about his move to Williams. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after qualifying, he said, “Yeah, definitely. It might have just [been] how it is meant to be. Now it is a matter of working hard because I see a lot of potential in this team, a lot of potential to unleash from myself, with a team [like Williams], with the full support, with the full machinery working in the right places. I feel like we are on the right path.”
Doohan’s early crash at his home race only adds to the pressure he is facing this season. Alpine’s decision to sign Franco Colapinto as a reserve driver has fueled speculation that Doohan’s seat could be at risk if his performances fail to improve. Meanwhile, Hadjar’s crash on the formation lap highlighted the challenges rookies face in adapting to the complexities of Formula 1.
