Aaron Rodgers is about to hit free agency, and the NFL is already buzzing about where he’ll land. The New York Jets are expected to cut the future Hall of Famer, freeing him up to sign anywhere. Obvious contenders—Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers—are in play. But there’s a more chaotic, left-field scenario unfolding: Rodgers to the Los Angeles Rams.
It’s not just a wild rumor. A general manager, speaking to
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, laid out a possible chain reaction. Step one: The Rams trade Matthew Stafford to the New York Giants. Step two: Aaron Rodgers signs with the Rams. Sounds messy, but it actually makes sense.
The Los Angeles Rams moving on from Matthew Stafford could open the door for Aaron Rodgers
The Rams and Matthew Stafford are in an awkward spot. He wants more money—beyond the $27 million Los Angeles owes him in 2025. The Rams? Not sold on giving it to him. If Stafford pushes for a raise and the front office won’t budge, a trade is inevitable. And the New York Giants? They’re desperate.
Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are on the hot seat. They need wins now. If they don’t deliver, they’re gone. So, if Los Angeles puts Stafford on the table, the Giants might be the first to bite.
"Stafford wants a raise over the $27 million the Rams are due to pay him in 2025. If Stafford and the Rams can’t work it out — and if the Giants (with a coach and/or a G.M. on the hot seat) want to make a big swing in the hopes of winning now — they’d be a candidate to pay him and to give the Rams fair and proper trade compensation," Florio explained.
And if Stafford leaves, the Rams suddenly have a problem. Enter Aaron Rodgers.
If Matthew Stafford leaves, Aaron Rodgers could take over as the short-term answer for the Los Angeles Rams
Rodgers to the Rams wouldn’t be a long-term solution, but it would be a clean fix for 2025. He’d keep them competitive, buy them time to develop a younger quarterback, and—most importantly—keep Sean McVay’s offense moving. The biggest obstacle? Money.
Rodgers is owed a massive contract, but there’s speculation he’d take a discount to make this happen.
"There’s a belief that Rodgers’s desire to play for the Rams will get him to do a sweetheart deal," Florio wrote.
"That frees up cash and cap space to be used in 2025 or banked for the coming wave of second contracts, starting in 2026 with receiver Puka Nacua."For Los Angeles, it’s a win-win. Rodgers gets them through 2025. They draft a quarterback or wait for another big-name veteran to shake loose. And for Rodgers? Playing under McVay, with Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, in sunny LA, instead of dealing with another cold, miserable season in New York? No-brainer.
The Rams still have a shot at keeping Stafford, but if that door closes, Rodgers is the most obvious replacement. It’s not official yet. But if Stafford moves, expect Rodgers’ name to be the next one linked to LA.
