The Mumbai Cricket Association has made it mandatory for Mumbai's players to participate in its upcoming T20 Mumbai league, which is being relaunched with much fanfare. The rule applies to the city's India players too.
"It's compulsory, but all our India players have expressed their keenness to play in the league when we spoke to them. Anyone who misses out without a genuine reason will not be considered for selection in the Mumbai team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament," a source in the MCA told Mumbai Mirror.
Of course, those players who will be picked for India or India A for the tour of England or are injured will be unable to play in the event.
The tournament is set to see the participation of India's T20 captain
Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube,
Ajinkya Rahane and
Prithvi Shaw. Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur, who are in the running to be picked for India's upcoming tour of England, too are likely to feature in the league if they would be available.
On Friday, the MCA announced India's Test and ODI captain
Rohit Sharma as the brand ambassador for the T20 Mumbai League. Set to lead the Indian team in England for the Test series, Rohit will not be able to play in the league.
Around 2,800 local cricketers have registered for the upcoming league and an auction for its league will be held in May. The association is planning to start its league just after the IPL from May 26 to June 5.
