A Surya Grahan, or
solar eclipse, occurs when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun, and blocks the Sun’s light either partially, or completely, or in a ring-like structure. And thus, the Surya Grahan brings many different interpretations and meanings for people. In Hinduism, for example, it is seen as an ominous period where the energies are imbalanced and it thus creates a negative atmosphere.
And while the Surya Grahan will not be visible in India, there are still people who believe in staying safe from the energies it comes with and follow some precautions. So here are a few tips to protect oneself during an Eclipse.
Chanting and mantra jaapOne of the best ways to keep any negativity or harmful energies aside is to chant and do mantra jaap. You can chant a mantra or a hymn of any God you hold dear to your heart, it could be Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, or Lord Shiva. And many people decide to chant the Hanuman Chalisa as it helps instil a sense of courage within people and makes them stronger from the inside.
People say that chanting the Hanuman Chalisa 100 times “jo shat baar paath kar koi, chhut hi bandhi Mahasukh hoi” can help immensely.
Try not to wear loud coloursIt is also said that during an Eclipse, it is best to not wear any loud or dark colours, especially black or dark grays and blues. Some people believe that these colours attract negative energies due to their loud nature, and can disrupt the peaceful atmosphere needed during such sensitive times.
Instead, wear simple, neutral-colored clothing like white, beige, or light blue to keep you calm.
Cleanse the home with GangajalAnother important practice that many people do is to cleanse their home with Gangajal. Almost every Hindu family always has Gangajal in their home, owing to its spiritual and purifying nature, and thus once the eclipse is over, sprinkle Gangajal around the rooms, in the home temple, near the entrance of your house, and other places.
Burn camphor around the house Camphor, or Kapur, is considered a pure and cleansing element in Hinduism, and burning Camphor inside the home is said to purify the environment inside. The soft fragrance, the fumes, all of it is considered powerful in nature.
And so, after the eclipse is over, around 6:00 PM, burn 4-5 Kapur tablets and spread the smoke around your house to cleanse it.
Do not make any major decisionsFor people who believe in the harmful effects of a Surya Grahan, making any major decisions during this time is never right. As it is considered an ominous time, making life or career decisions during this time might not sit well. It is said that an eclipse brings with itself negative energies, anger, and a ton of emotions, and so it is best to avoid taking major life decisions during this time. People do not think about job changes, marriage choices, breakups, or even about going out during this time.
