Dolly Parton is paying tribute to her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean, through music, releasing an emotional new song in his memory. The country music icon, 79, revealed her latest track, 'If You Hadn’t Been There,' on March 6, just days after Dean’s passing on March 3 at the age of 82 in Nashville.
Taking to Instagram, Parton shared a nostalgic throwback photo of the couple, where she can be seen playfully riding on Dean’s back. In the heartfelt caption, she reflected on their decades-long love story.
“Carl and I fell in love when I was just 18 and he was 23. Like all great love stories, they never truly end,” she wrote. “They live on in memory and in song, and I dedicate this to him.”
Parton and Dean’s romance began in an unexpected place—a Nashville laundromat where they first met in the 1960s. The connection was instant and just two years later, they tied the knot in 1966. Despite Parton’s rise to global superstardom, Dean remained notoriously private, choosing to live away from the spotlight while supporting his wife’s legendary career from behind the scenes.
In a rare public statement in 2016, Dean reflected on the day he met Parton. “The moment I saw her, I knew I was going to marry that girl,” he recalled. “And my second thought was, ‘Lord, she’s beautiful.’”
Throughout their nearly 60-year marriage, Parton often spoke about her husband’s preference for a quiet life. In a 2019 interview, she shared, “As long as I don’t try to drag him into it, he’s happy. He has always been my biggest fan, just from a distance.”
Parton’s song 'If You Hadn’t Been There' serves as a musical love letter to Dean, expressing gratitude for his unwavering support. The lyrics reflect the deep bond they shared:
“If you hadn’t been there,Where would I be? Without your trust, love, and belief,” she sings.
“The ups and downs,We’ve always shared,And I wouldn’t be here, if you hadn’t been there.”
The track echoes a past tribute she made in honor of her uncle, Billy Earl Owens, who passed away in 2021. At the time, she had written, “I wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t been there,” words that now take on an even deeper meaning in light of her loss.
Following Dean’s passing, Parton took to social media to thank fans for their outpouring of love and support. “This is a love note to family, friends, and fans,” she wrote. “Thank you for the messages, cards and flowers. Your kindness means the world to me.”
She ended her tribute with a touching reference to one of her most iconic songs: “He is in God’s arms now and I’m at peace with that. I will always love you.”
Though Carl Dean is no longer physically by her side, his love and influence will live on through Parton’s music—a testament to a love story that will never truly fade.
